Given the realism that the new trek is going for how will it look when someone gets blasted with a phaser?

The one weak point of scfi with any type of laser is that we don't really see any damage done. Or if so it comes off as pretty cheesy.

To a point we have had to rely on our imaginations but will the new Trek movie make these things seem like a very real and very potent weapon?

i would assume with better effects we'll damage more in line with what we have seen from Phaser on later Trek shows.

You know, that makes me think about the old b&w Superman TV show. The bad guy would shoot Superman and the bullets would ricochet off with a cheesy special effect. But then the crook would throw the empty pistol at Superman and he would duck to avoid getting hit (because the crook/actor really threw the prop gun).

Well remember the assault phasers in VI, they cut right through flesh, so I'm sure they'll come up with something creative.

I'd just be happy with a better dematerialization effect. Stun will always be stun. I mean, how many different things can you do to a human body to accomplish a goal of either stunning or killing? "OK team, set phasers for 'heavy maim.'"
