Default Will the "Spock Factor" Translate With A New Actor Playing Him?

Not that I have any doubts of Zachary Quinto as an actor, but will that factor that made Spock the subject of so much fan fantasy survive in his protrayal?

What do YOU think?

Great question. To reiterate what you said, I don't doubt Quinto's acting chops. And I do believe this movie is going to be Spock-centric.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I think he is the most interesting character from the ST Universe, and then Data and Seven of Nine. The reason I state this is because Spock is half human, which makes the writers, and therefore the viewers ask themselves the same questions Spock would. (Everyone feels like an outsider [alien] no matter what station in life.) What are these emotions we feel? Why does love come to us, many times pressing us to make irrational decisions? Do we need these emotions? Could we overcome them?

One could really go on and on. The Questions of all Time. For me, those reasons are why Spock is an enduring, relatable character.

As for the fan fiction or whatever, I have never read any, so I couldn't speculate.

I had already fantasized that Zachary Quinto <3 would play Spock long before he was cast... I think he'll do just fine *swoons*

Great point Ron! So you can see him easily as Spock?

My only concern is his voice. Visually he's spot on. I've tried watching Skylar-centric episodes of Heroes and I guess I can see that he can do the Spock voice, but I'm going to need to hear it myself because his natural voice doesn't even come close to "Spockian". (I'm also flipping out about John Cho's voice....he's on record as saying he can't get within 2 octaves of Takei's voice....I'm so afraid it's going to be Star Trek: The Chipmunks Take Over.)

Adding a bit to Ron's fine analysis: I think one key of Quinto's likely success taking over the role is that Nimoy will be there "with him" as it were (that is we'll see that direct comparison of old/young Spock). Fans can actually witness the 'handoff' between actors, which I expect to be written and acted to exploit the emotional, dramatic potential of such a story point.

Plus, Zach looks so right for the part, the transition will be easy. HOW fans like the young Spock as a character will depend a great deal on the story, but I think the Spock-centric nature of the supposed plot will use this to its advantage.

In some respect, Zach has the toughest standard to reach since a direct comparison can be made; in other ways, he'll have an advantage the other actors won't in the same way.
