Good observations on the canon issue.

Personally I usually get lost in the stories and don't get caught up on many canon details unless the inconsistency is blatant and obvious. Also, there is a whole other Trek universe in books etc. that is not generally considered canon but I also quite enjoy.

From what we've heard, JJ and crew have done their homework but are not afraid to take some liberties as the origination story of the iconic characters has yet to be done on-screen.

Ultimately, I think Star Trek XI will come down to simple arithmatic:

Good story + good directing + good acting + good cinematography + good editing + good soundtrack = great movie.
Nice math on the film!

Welcome. At This Point, Canon Doesn't Matter. The Star Trek Franchise Is Like The Enterprise In A Deteriorating Orbit. JJ And His Team Are Like The Engineers That Are Fixing the Engines. Now, I'd Like Them To Keep It Realistic, But, They've Offered To Jumpstart A Dying And Increasingly Unpopular Series. Canon At This Point Can Go Climb A Mountain

You could look at it that way, but if that's the case it would essentially be an alternate universe and the entire last 40 years could be ignored because none of it would have happened yet.

J.J. Abrams, Leonard Nimoy, and KurtzOrci have said a hundred times they'll respect the canon.
