Are there any free applications out there for doing this kind of stuff?, because MS Paint is NOT cutting it.

I thought that too. I gave up after 10 minutes and plan to go back to it in about 5 years when I have the time

...Which is the little menu button along from the 'File Edit Select etc...' ones. Which is the 'Filters' menu.

They give you lots of impressive effects! And then once you discover how to use Layers, there's no stopping you!
