I totally agree, when this pic becomes a hot, everbody will forget that ever happened.

While shoplifting is a crime, and she was punished for it, as you pointed out, it wasn't like she killed someone, or sold drugs, or abused children.

I love Winona Ryder*.

That is all.

* = No, it's not just Ryder-lust. I actually like her acting a great deal - even when she's been involved with an out-and-out stinker, she's usually acquitted herself very well indeed. Hell, if she could almost single-handedly salvage Dracula - and to my mind she did - she's more than capable of knocking Amanda out of the park, IMO...

There's nothing wrong with her as an actress. If Robert Downey Jr. had been cast in this movie, would you have reacted in the same manner? Probably not but remember that he used to be a total junky and almost lost his career because of it. But now of course he's back on the horse and going strong because Hollywood decided to give him a chance. I think Wynona deserves the same.

..or was it the Alien: Resurrection fiasco
I think your'e right from a marketing point of view, but I rather liked her in Alien 3 or was it 4. Anyway. She has had good and bad roles in her career, like any actor/actress. I hated Little Women

If Michael Keaton puts in a cameo as Betelgeuse, I'll watch the film. In the theater.

There's nothing at all wrong with Wynona Rider (except maybe the shoplifting, but that's a minor issue and another story). If it were up to me, I would have chosen Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Still the same, Ryder is a good actress, and I'm sure she'll serve this role well.

Oh Jesus. Shoplifting... Congratulations everyone! You've established that Wynona Ryder is in fact a **** sapien.

Everyone has skeletons in the closet. What's yours? Oh, I digress.

I could give a stale piece of roach spit what actors do off screen (short of immoral crimes against others of course, which shoplifting falls significantly short of in my eyes), it's what they do on screen that matters. Quite frankly, Ryder is actually pretty good. She was better than I thought in Alien Resurrection (one of the only saving graces of that movie).

She's actually a quality actor and quite easy on the eyes I might add. Shoplifting... Wow, some of you need to get your ****ing noses out of those stupid tabloid magazines. Or maybe you can tell me who's giving birth to an alien baby with five wangs.

Man I really have to agree on this point! No one is perfect and we ALL have done things that we are not proud of. Do we all pay for those things continually forever? No. Atleast not all of the time. Give this lady a break!

Secondly I don't care if it's Miss Ryder or Rosie freakin' O'Donnell playing the part. As long as the character is well played and does not come across as two dimentional on screen. I say go for it.
