Look, I don't know how much screen time Amanda will have but let's be honest, I really don't think that her character and/or how she is portrayed and/or acted will have much chance of making or breaking this film. There are many more important variables the movie will have to contend with.
As for Ms. Horowitz (her real name), I have zero issue with her as an actress. She's easy on the eyes (at the very least (I had a little crush after Heathers came out)) and I'm sure she'll do the role justice.

She's OK. Not my first choice mostly because she is so young. She's not even 10 years older than Zachary Quinto who plays her son. But, that worked OK for Sally Fields and Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump so it will probably work here too. She does have a calm, almost icy, older than her years presence that makes the fact that she was willing to give up the emotional life of a human and live on Vulcan believable. But she's no "Mother Knows Best" Jane Wyman. At least they didn't hire Rosanne Barr or something ridiculas like that.
