TSFS had a much stronger story at it's heart, and it had a much more emotional script - Kirk losing the son he had just been reunited with, losing his ship - as captain, then literally having to sacrifice it, seeing McCoy's mental torment, and Spock's return. I agree that TMP was trying to emulate CE3K more than Star Wars but despite the beauty of the effects the story was just a lot weaker.

I agree with kevin on this one. Search for Spock was character driven. That's more what Trek is all about. The Motion Picture was more about razzle dazzling the audiance with a lot of pretty models and effects. The characters got lost.

I hate to say it, but you could have stripped TMP down to a half an hour, and still told the same story. THAT, my friends, is a mark of a bad film.

Well TMP's script was originally meant to be 90 mins pilot film for TV, so i asumme that why the padding.

Probably, it was clearly extended by the long, elaborate space sequences, which are beautiful to look at but don't really get the story going anywhere. That was one thing I never understood - they had to solve the mystery of the cloud before Earth was potentially destroyed - yet the movie just never had any tension in it.

I absolutely love TSFS, and believe it to be a work of pure genius, and TMP is my favorite film of all time, but both movies are considered weaker films in the franchise. So which was worse of the two? My guess is that majority will pick TMP, though I personally can't see why.
I secodn that. Great movies, TWOK is overrated IMO. All movies are unique and whenevery the uniqueness is copied (like Nemesis bearing many similarities to TWOK) you get a bad movie.

TWOK itself is actually "borrowed" form "Run Silent, Run Deep."
