No... not a mistake at all. The Enterprise NCC-1701 will ALWAYS be known as Kirk's ship. Just as HMS Victory will always be Horatio Nelson's Victory, even though there were other men who commanded her. If they had arrived in Pike's time, in their minds it still would have been Kirk's ship.

That still wouldn't preclude a little shout out to April, IMO. The only reason why I think it's remotely possible is because Orci is such a Trekkie and was cited as having read one of the books in which April appeared in--so a bone could be thrown in that direction. I could see April being mentioned briefly in passing by Pike in the movie if they want to give the Enterprise a bigger sense of history when Kirk takes over...

I'm just not sure how this could be done...like this maybe?

And that would be it, absolutely nothing more. Keep it simple. Just a casual bit of name dropping with no need to explain anything further or include dates or whatever. Trek fans who know about April would "get it" and those who don't would consider it just a brief hint of a backstory...

Ah, so the big empty space in the aft side of the 'belly' is a shuttlebay? I saw that hole in models and wondered if it's for cargo storage or something like that
