Not all the high hair was hideous....

And, no, it was not required that hair be "up".

I didn't grab her picture, but, of course, Tonia Barrows has free flowing hair.

Well even the ones that don't have the hair up would still fall within regulations by today's standards. Tonia Barrows is probably coming really close to borderline. By today's standards, the hair doesn't have to be up provided that it doesn't hang below the horizontal line of the lower edge on the back of the collar.

I think Rand, Troi, and Crusher are the only ones off the top of my head that really wouldn't pass.

However it is true that regulations change and in some cases they aren't enforced as much. One example is beards. Back in the day, beards were allowed, then they weren't really allowed except in the case of submarine personnel on deployment. Now they're pretty much out for everyone.

I thought beards were allowed. I remember reading that a high percentage of African American men really need to have a beard. If they shave their hair gets ingrown which creates a bump which gets cut by the razor and gets infected so for health reasons, short, well groomed beards were allowed. I could be wrong.

Frankly, I'd love it if the "on duty" hair was kept simple and either short or confined. It would just be more professional. I have to think Uhura will have her classic, lovely do though....I mean...if she didn't have those sideburns how could we go on?

Beards were allowed. Riker had one, The Captain of the Reliant had one in TWOK, and so did the Captain of the Bozeman, played by Kelsey Grammer. I don't think such high profile officers would be sporting beards if they were against starfleet regulations.

I think the Royal Navy still allows them provided that they are accompanied with a mustache and vice versa, but the US Navy did away with them. There was a brief time in the 1970s and 1980s when they were allowed, but since then the USN sent them down to Davy Jones' locker. The justification that was given was hygiene and the necessity of maintaining a good seal on gas masks. Supposedly the USN will allow a person to grow one provided that they can obtain a "no shave" chit for medical reasons. The Coast Guard on the other hand allowed beards until 1986. Some military services from other countries will allow beards with the expressed permission of a high ranking officer.

As a Starfleet head "Follicular Consultant," (LOL) I want B.B.H. -- BIG BEAUTIFUL HAIR. I love the cookey do's of the original series. I hope they at least have a couple in ST: XI.

The hairstyles will reflect our idea of what looks professional today and what we today would think hair would look like in the 23rd century. Sorry, but 60's looks will just look fan-boyish...

I understand what your saying, but hairstyles come and go. There was a time you couldn't get a girl to straighten her hair and now... And further more, woman still wear their hair up.

In my professional opinion as a stylist for twenty years, and knowing that coiffures are in vogue one year and out the next and repeat, it's not totally unthinkable or unfashionable that woman or transgendered people might wear updo's in that century. I mean, if you think about it -- even clothing comes in and out of style. Maybe, just maybe, people will be wearing jumpsuits. Although those colors of ST:TOS aren't the most flattering.

But I liked the whacked out hair styles, they were so entertaining!

Beautiful hair, however big, will be welcome. ( I did note that not all of the big hair was bad)

Weird hair that is strange just for the purpose of being strange (Rand's basket weave...about 75% of Chapel's styles) would be bad.
