So your saying matter hits anti matter in the Dilithium and conversts to energy that is delivered to the nacelles?

Personally, I think it's when the captain says "Engage," and the helmsman hits the button...whoosh!

Pretty much it, yep. The resulting energy (sometimes referred to as electroplasma or warp plasma) travels through big conduits from engineering to the nacelles where they pass through the warp coils inside. The coils are laced with verterium cortenide, a substance that--when energized by the warp plasma--creates the subspace field (or warp field) a ship uses to travel at "bat outta hell speed" with...

LOL, Commodore rescues us again..

So how does it travel there, Trek's been pretty cagey about that..

Also does this apply to 23rd century ships as well?

It's a compilation of 'bits and pieces' heard here and there. (Mostly 'technobabble'.)

Throughout the series? Or from just one?

Good enough for me! I like the explanation you posted on the other thread. I was just wondering where all the anti-matter comes from.

And perhaps rightfully so. There's lots of different theories about how warp drive works and Trek has sort of avoided nailing down a specific one. They've kinda taken bits and pieces here and there like Gunny said.

But it might be assumed that the warp coils play a role in propulsion. One idea is that the nacelles fire off in a fore-to-aft sequence at very high rates of speed, layering multiple subspace fields around and behind the vessel and "propelling" it forward.

That's a good question. They may have had a different system in use back in those days...
