McCoy grew a beard and Spock went to Gol and Kirk got promoted to Admiral....beyond that, it's fan fic....

Er... and perhaps a LITTLE work was done on the Big E herself? (...or is that just another 'way out' theory...?)

It was 30 months not 18... The work on the Enterprise took 18 months but Kirk has been Head of Star Fleet Operations for TWO and a half years. Kirk basically got USED by Star Fleet Admiral Nogura as a symbol. A PR tool. McCoy is reputed to have resigned from Star Fleet after an argument with Nogura over what was really best for James Kirk.

So what did Kirk do there, really?

I get the impression that Kirk was Nogura's "Dog and Pony show" Need to get appropriations from the council for new Star Fleet projects... Send Jim Kirk to testify to the need... Want a good media PR draw? Send Kirk out to be photographed...

It helps explain his reaction to all the press in Generations... He's seen it before and now he doesn't HAVE to pretend its great.
