Default What Do You Think Happened To Kirk Between Trek 6 And Generations?

There's some lost time here...what do you think happened?

I think the real question is "Why did Kirk not fight retiring with tooth and nail?" He seems to have thrown himself into basically pointless diversions like orbital skydiving just to distract himself from retirement hell.

I had allways wondered if he'd been "forced" to retire.

That's one thing I had planned to address in that little story of mine... Jadzia Dax asking WHY he retired...

Kirk's response (As I imagine) "When I got the Enterprise I was 34 years old... Many of my classmates were still lieutenants. I was hot commodity on my way up. By the time I was 40 I was an Admiral... The poster boy for Star Fleet success. But I felt trapped... Admiral has an impressive sound to it doesn't it? But What it really means is that your life is ruled by your desk... I found that I would do anything to get away from that. And I did... I forced Admiral Nogura to give me back the Enterprise and I didn't care that I was rolling over another man's life to get it....

So I had the Enterprise back and for five years I was Captain again... But when it was over it was time to move on... Spock deserved the Enterprise and it was time for me to grow up.... I thought I was doing the right thing, that it was my obligation to move on and not keep trying to hold on to the dream. But I still felt trapped by a desk.

"Spock said that it was a mistake for me to have accepted promotion.... Commanding a Starship was my first Best destiny. he said. And then I got lucky enough to get it all back. For Ten years I was Captain of the Enterprise A. But in that time something changed. Not in me but in Star Fleet... Men who were two and three classes behind me at the Academy were Admirals now and the galaxy got tired of Captain Kirk...

They would have been satisfied if I had taken an Admiralcy again but I swore I would never go back to that. Then they took the Enterprise and I swore I'd never step foot on a Starship again."

Now that is some food for thought!

Yeah, I agree. Kirk was a starship captain without a starship. Starfleet was turning more politically correct after the Khitomer Conference, and cowboys like Kirk weren't part of the equation anymore, IMO. Starfleet wasn't going to give Kirk command of another starship--they decided his day was done.

Kind of makes me wonder if Sulu had a similar experience later in his career on Excelsior, or if he was able to adapt with the changing times...

Hmm so they "encouraged" him to retire?

Wonder if maybe they offered him a Ceremonical(Flag) Commodore or Admiralty rank, and he told them were they could stuf it after he realized that there was no ship in the offer?

"whatever you do don't let them promote you, don't let them do anything that will take you away from that chair because while you are there, you can make a difference."

I don't think anybody could force him and I don't know how he would choose to leave?
