I'm too tired for all this technical talk and the most I know about Battleships goes something like "D-5 is a hit and you've sunk my Destroyer" lol.

...So I'll just say...

YAY DEFIANT!

This is one thing I like about Trek; both ships above are 'propellor-driven ships-of-the-line with turret-mounted main batteries', and hence could be argued to be the 'same basic idea', you can see the design advancements that have created a whole new 'look' to battleships.

Likewise, Trek manages to keep this real-world example alive. The familiar aspects of warp-phaser-shields are there; but in a totally different configuration in the Intrepid-class as opposed to the Constitution-class... just like real life. (...and pre-warp ships are like sailing ships, etc., etc...)
Exactly. I've noticed this on my trek research.
I'm always fascinated when I see how phasers and torpedoes have.."evolved" of the years. The design... and placement configuration. From banks to arrays. From tubes to turrets...even shields have become multispectral and modulating. I like Trek because we continue to see advancement.

In the real world we see Exocets, Harpoons and cruise missles.
In trek we see photon, Quantums and Tricobalt devices. Tech continues to advance.

It really depends on what era your talking about. I really don't compare WWI vessels and WWII vessels when I pick my favorites.

Because "Admiral Janeway" brought it from 25 years in the future. We can assume there were advances made.
