Its powerful for it's size, but is out gunned by large ships such as the Galaxy class as shown in the the episode Valiant, in which attacking a Dominion Battleship described as being twice as powerful as a Galaxy class Starship is regarded as a total suicide mission (which indeed it turned out to be).

Only for a bunch of Cadets.
They never said the Dominion Battleship was more powerful than the Defiant.
And Defiant has taken on larger targets.

Cadets or not, the Valiant's fire had little effect on the Dominion ship, while it's fire quickly knocked the Valiant's defences out, followed very quickly by the loss of the ship. This of course is another example of the inconsistencies in Trek that in some episodes the Defiant (class) is invincible and in others such as Valiant and Star Trek First Contact it is as weak as water.

The Defiant it's self has always proven highly potent.
Valiant was damaged. Behind the lines for 8 months.

And I assure you cadets make a big difference. When they're plan failed and the Dominion ship killer didn't bust wide open they gawked and stared instead of retreating from theatre. Valiant took a lot of shots in that Episode and avoided even more. The only problem I ever saw was they're execution. That was a fight they never should have started.

They might have been courtmartialed for not returning the ship to 375 immediately after it's repair.

Under the circumstances, they probably got a reprimand. Seems in the Trek universe you tend to be forgiven if the senario ends well...lol..not so in real life.

Yes, that is completely true.
Janeway comes to mind.

So does Kirk, Sisco, Archer, Riker, and on a few occasions, Picard.

I think definitely Kirk and Riker.
I can't recall Sisko doing anything against the P.M. Directively.

I think Defiant's fire power is on the same level of big ships.
With the pulse phasers the whole energy of a Phaser beam can be focused on one point at one single moment. Additionally the Pulse Phasers of the Defiant Class are strengthened by any technical trick compared to "normal" Pulse Phasers. That's why the Dominion fighters explode after one shot already. One hit by a pulse phaser of the Defiant is as strong as a long hit of a constant Phaser beam.

But I believe the Defiant lacks in Shield power compared to big ships. Because the Defiant can't carry a warpcore as big as these of Galaxy Class ships and therefore can't produce as many energy.
However this disadvantage can be reduced by their ablative armor. Which can protect the ship very well even with low Shields.

And the Galaxy comparison is unfair anyway. The Galaxy Class probably is the best ship of the whole quadrant. Since Odyssey you don't see any Galaxy Class getting destroyed. Of course it is a little better than the Defiant. But the Defiant comes shortly after her.

It's not commonly known but a Destroyed Galaxy is seen in the wreckage of the entire fleet in the battle of Chintoka.

Defiant's cannon layers nadion nadion particle around high energy plasma from the warp core. The number of layers is unknown but the process happens in a tenth of 1/4 of a second before firing. The Nadion's dissolve matter and the concentrated plasma in the center disrupts shields.
