Well, I agree the design isn't a typical Federation concept. But if one is to depart from the usual then this would be a good time. It's true that many times Defiant has been in battle that successive hits knock out multiple systems.

In her first battle. Shields, warp engines and the cloak were knocked out in the first volley. The ship was equipped with ablative armor to counteract that effect and it has proven the best idea. You're also right on target with repair. I think Defiant is a sealed design when it comes to the warp engines. Other wise the back vents could be removed and the entire assembly could be pulled out like a tray to gain access to the warp coils and ...there are only three or four of them in each side.

But I can't agree on the firepower. Defiant has faced the same enemies as the Galaxy. The GCS USS Odyssey had more than 5 minutes with 3 Dominion attack ships and couldn't take down one. Infact it had support ships aswell.

The problem is that from the evidence on hand I'm pretty sure the Federation had to adapt it's weapons to the Dominion shields. Nothing seemed to work at first. Tractors, phasers, shields. When the Defiant came on the scene, she dominated immediately. Those shields were a non factor.

So on the one hand the Dominion had a trump card. On the other hand we've....NEVER seen the GCS class with the Type X phaser destroy a dominion vessel...ever.

Defiant has dispatched dozens upon dozens of attack ships, Cardassian ships, Breen ships, a 3,000 plus meter long Negh'var twice (Mirror). Defiant is role ship so we're going to see it more often but I think the fire power of the pulse phaser is secure.
We know it take so much power to operate that it needs it's own reservoir to power the weapon.

I did like the design of the Defiant class. Starfleet needs a lot of different ships for different purposes. For it's purpose - gun platform with power - I think the design was fine.

It wasn't meant to do the same job as a Galaxy or Nebula class ship.

It's the F-14 in space.
Sturdy, strong, dependable, faithful.

Indeed, it's been said in the DS9 Tech Manual that the Defiant does not possess the exploratory capabilities of ships like the Galaxy, Nebula, Oberth, Miranda, Constitution, or Sovereign classes.

Ben Sisko: Officially, she's an escort ship. Unofficially, she's a warship.

Great analogy. I always found the Defiant to be a lot of kick-*** in a small package.
