I think that quote is just Simon being purposely vague so as not to give away any more of a time travel plot than he can. I wouldn't read too deeply into his exact wording.

One of the earlier quotes about TREK says it will focus on Kirk and Spock's relationship primarily. That can't happen in the TNG era. My pure guess is that we'll get maybe bookends of TNG-era time, but the majority of the film will be pre-TOS.

Almost all the lead actors in the film play characters in pre-TOS timeline, given their ages. That's where the main action will be, since you don't hire Chris Pine to play Kirk, then have him sit out half of the film. I hope not, anyway!

I agree there is intentional vagueness in these interview responses. I am NOT drawing any conclusions based on them. In fact, I would not be surprised if the plot does not involve actual time travel. What if we see Spock involved in some sort of adventure (reunification?) and he is telling a story or the past is a flashback? The flashback would actually have more screen time. I agree the new crew will be the overwhelming focus of this movie, as it should be,, I just want a little forward story telling in the post Nemisis timeframe.

Im wondering if you might not be more correct than you know. I kinda have the same thought on it. Kinda how I felt when I thought about Data being able to turn his emotions off.

You are right. When talking about Trek I have always used the present as meaning post nemisis timeframe. The future would be any furthering of the story from there, like the new Titan books if they were made into a mini-series or something. The past is everything else.

Tim Allen did a great Kirk impersonation.

I would agree with that statement.

And added his own twist to it at the same time, as any good comedic actor should.
