Of the names that I recognise, that seems pretty good!

Although, what is wrong with Ian McKellan? Not that Patrick is a bad choice.

I love Ian McKellen, but he's just not my choice for Gandalf. He just doesn't fit what I expected Gandalf to be like, and having read "The Hobbit" before seeing the films, I can say that I do have an independent view of the characters. I expected Gandalf to be someone who was more stiff, gruff, and commanding, and not quite as soft or gentle as how McKellen portrayed him. Having grown up watching Patrick Stewart portray Picard, I knew that he would be my first choice the world over to play the part of Gandalf. He was stern, commanding, and though he could be gentle on occasion, he was mostly strict. Kind of like the intimidating grandfather who you respect and fear at the same time.

Patrick Steawr would make a good Gandalf but not as good as Ian McKlellan.
Someone else who would be an excellent Gandalf would be Christopher Plumber.
I wouldn't be bad either as you can see by my profile pic.

James Earl Jones as Smaug would be the freaking bomb!

I must respectfully disagree re. Gandalf being gentle. I think when he was hanging in the Shire, he was on his "down" time and we didn't get to see him flexing his ring-enhanced muscles.
It still puzzles me that they had the Witch King almost beat him at Minas Tirith - NO ONE breaks Gandalf's staff in my world.

I'm thinking that wizard guy from the Altel "Chad" commercials as Gandalf...

Jack Black as Bilbo

Will Farell as Bard

Jay and Silent Bob as Dwarves

And Frank Welker as Gollum.

They're making the HObbit!!!!???? OMG!

Stick to the original cast!

Gandalf: Ian McKellen

Bilbo: Ian Holm (They made look young once they can do it again!)

Elrond: Whoever played him in the LOTR Trilogy

Gollum: Andy Serkis (No one is better than him Precious!)

Smaug voice: John Rhys-Davies

Um, Elrond was played by Hugo Weavering (The Matrix, V for Vendetta, and Pricilla, Queen of the Desert) And yes, I agree with you... make it a matched set.

Well, I take back one thing: the voice of Smaug.... I would go for either Brian Blessed, or maybe Alan Rickman.

Mmmmm - a Snape-based Smaug.

I was thinking that Keanu Reeves would make a good Elrond. I love the Hugo-man but I thought he was a little too old to play Elrond.
