Default Do all of the crew have families?

Kirk's family is mentioned in the old series, as is Spock's. But by and large i haven't really heard anything about the parents or siblings of the rest of the crew, except for that fictional brother Checkov said he had one time, and then someone said he was an only child after all. The real reason i'm asking this is because i always wondered if any of the crew were orphans. It always seems to me that Scotty probably grew up on the streets and got pretty tough and streetwise from it. He doesn't seem like a homebody. He once called himself an "Old Aberdeen Pub Crawler". So he must have mis-spent at least part of his youth before he joined the Starfleet engineering corps. But he also had to be a scholar because uneducated people don't usually get into the academy. I figure McCoy had a pretty good childhood with a loving family because he developed such sensitivity and a caring nature. He was probably really close to his mother and she was probably a nurturer and his dad was probably a strict disciplinarian because he also seems like the kind of guy who rebelled when he was a teen. Becoming a doctor was probably something his Dad didn't have in mind for young Leonard. But Scotty? He seems like he had a much rougher childhood that probably included street fights and bar brawls, and it doesn't seem as though he regrets it all that much. In fact, he seems kind of proud of it. I just wondered.

This really belongs in the TOS section of the forums, but anyway I don't know about The Enterprise's crew families.

I heard McCoy had a daughter. That's about all I know that isn't public knowledge IMO.

I fail to comprehend your indignation, sir. I have simply made the logical deduction that you are a liar. (Spock)

I believe the most 'concrete' story of McCoy's family is that his father had a terrible disease, which may well have influenced Bones going into medicine. I think the backstory is that a treatment/cure for his father's disease was developed just after his father died. I think this was just before he joined Starfleet for ship service. It was a bitter irony Bones never really got over.

I don't know of any backstory for Scotty at all.

In the cut scenes for TWOK, Cadet Peter Preston is revealed to be Scotty's Nephew by his sister. (Preston being the badly burned cadet Scotty carries to the bridge.)

Why does it belong in the TOS section when we're dealing with the same characters in Star Trek XI? I think this thread is perfectly suitable to this forum.

I think mods can move stuff if they disagree with the location so maybe we should just let the mods moderate....

Back story on the other characters is fertile ground for the reboot in my view....

This is perfect for here, because we are dealing with origns of our beloved charaters. We know that McCoy let his father die, to spare him a non existance of pain, and then they found a cure for hsi father's ailment 6 months later. We know he had a failed marrige.

I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about the rest of the Enterprise 7. B-7, and Eliza make great points!

Although families never really came up much in TOS, I would imagine the Enterprise had about the same ratio of married/single personnel as a modern day cruiser or carrier has today.

Kinda off topic, but why did Scotty Carry his nephew to the bridge seeing how sickbay is between Main engineering and the bridge. That scene always seems out of place.

Back on topic. Other than the ones mentioned here in thread, there is not much known about the families of the rest. But didn't see anyone talk about Sulu's Daughter Demora, as we all know is the Helmsmen of the E-B
