Well, we have Spock, Kirk and the Enterprise, "Beam me up Scotty" the Vulcan salute, "To boldly go where no man has gone before" among other Star Trek things that have really become an ubiquitous part of our culture. If the movie is done well, I suspect a lot of the general populace will be curious enough to check it out, and good word of mouth will draw in even more who would be otherwise hesitant. I hope my optimism will come to fruition at least!

Well as long as we all force our friends and family to go and see it we should get enough money for the film to warrant a sequel

I loved the review they quoted in the Nemesis ads. "A great action film, and not just for the fans either" by the editor of star trek magazine.
I think this one will be broader though. A blockbuster for sure.

It needs some really good promotion. They need to make people aware that this isn't just another Trek movie but something bigger and different. Then it's going to need good word of mouth. I think it will be a hit but not huge like Spider-Man but more like Batman Begins.

100% true. It's probably the reason why the title of the movie wasn't displayed in the teaser... Once a person sees "Star Trek" they think of low budget, geek only, film...

I'm not sure about a complete blockbuster, but I surely hope it won't be a complete bust.

Still, it can hardly be any worse than Insurrection or Nemesis, and that's already a success.

Sorry for necroposting but I thought this thread still had a bit of life left in it. I think the new film will do great, but it will depend on what it is up against in May of 2009. I'm hoping it does like Iron Man did and come out when there really isn't much else exciting happening at the theaters. Anyone know what other films are out then?

I don't think this film will need to fear other movies....this is the movie other movies fear.
