Default The Fear of what could be...

So I was thinking about people's fears and the new movie. And what could J.J. and friends do to ST XI that would be breaking canon too much?

For me it would be making the 1701 in a different font, but that's me. Oh come now, you knew I was joking.

Seriously, what would be that one thing that would really p!ss you off if they changed? There must be something. Okay, so I'll go first.

Please, please what ever you do, J.J. -- don't change the computer voice of Majel Barrett even if you have to cut pieces from previous shows and link them together.

Majel Barrett is in poor health, I've heard. If so, she's probably unable to do the computer voice even if Abrams wanted her to do it.

But I think the biggest fear most people have--perhaps more than anything--is that the new movie may not live up to its hype and wind up being a turkey...

I agree, my biggest fear is that they are hoping so much for the blockbuster of the summer, and they're going to bury Star Trek forever if it doesn't make it. (Or, worse, decide to TOTALLY remake it).

As far a a "change" that JJ might do, personally, I don't want to see him mess up what I think are the fundamentals. Star Trek should be about a ship and crew off exploring strange new worlds...not a warship out on a 5 year patrol where they stop off frequently at planets to "Show the flag of the Federation", ect.

I think Ron was trying to get at specifics here...

So if you say "don't change the ship too much" what specifically about the ship would you be pissed if they changed?

I want the ship to sound the same as TOS, right down to the "Fsss!" sound when a doorway opens. I want Uhura's earpiece to be true to TOS. I want to see a kilt in Scotty's quarters and Bones' collection of skulls in sickbay.

Mostly I don't want to get to the end of the movie and feel like I've just watched an episode of LOST...confused and frustrated.

Going back to the computer voice, i think that a member of the orgianal series cast might be a nice idea for the voice. How about Nichelle Nichols. Or is that a really bad idea as i suspect lol.

Or as a joke getting Jonny Depp to do the voice and having it reply back to people in the voice of Jack Sparrow. "unable to comply, savey!"

Or a sexy female voice, Keira Knightly mmm now thats more like it lol. the only problem with that is that Kirk would spend the whole time flirting with it>

But I am sure they have an extensive recorded libary of Majel's computer voice from TNG, and the TNG films, that can easily be modified for TOS. I know Majel did the TOS too, but am going to assume it won't sound like that in the new film.

I know it can't be helped, but I'm worried about how the new actors are going to handle the classic roles. I just can't see anyone else playing Kirk, but Shatner. Ditto for Bones and Scotty and everyone.

From the teaser it looks like they are staying true to the orginal Enterprise design.

I fail to comprehend your indignation, sir. I have simply made the logical deduction that you are a liar. (Spock)
