Nichelle told the story that not only did Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. watch the show, meeting him was a fundamental moment in persuading Nichelle not to quit the series after S1.

If this is true, then that's mighty high praise for Star Trek! Stephen Hawking and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., both fans? I'll stand with those shipmates any day of the week!

Martin Luther King Jr. was apparently the one who convinced Nichelle Nichols (actor who played Uhura) to stay on the show after season one. He reportedly said, "For the first time, people who don't look like us will see us as we should be seen--not only as beautiful beings, but intelligent and competent."

Françoise Sagan, a famous French writer (now deceased), was a fan of Star Trek.
I don't know if she's famous outside France, but well, at least she's famous here!;-)

Oh, i know her from my french studies. French came in useful for Star Trek? Who knew?
