I think it's a hoot....I also think it gives us some of the best character interaction among the big three. Are there problems? Sure. But it's a fun, funny movie....I often put it on just for the giggles....

On the other hand...I'm not even sure I own a copy of Star Trek VI....

I think the thing I hated about the film was that I could tell Shatner was playing his costars for laughs. That alone SERIOUSLY killed that film for me. Bryan Ferren's effects were not that bad. I thought his depiction of the energy barrier, and the God planet were actually every bit as good as those done digitally for the film "Solaris" recently. They were just different from the ILM take of things... and frankly, there are some aspects to the ILM effects that I have never liked either. Remember, these are the same guys who wanted to blow up the Enterprise permenently, because they didn't like the overall design. (That should tell you something about their loyalty to the Trek style.)

I have to go with you on this one about Trek 5.

Solaris, I felt the effects were way better done. Ok, the 1974 version of Solaris had better acting, I think.

I think it was one of the best films for the "fun interaction" between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. It was just a bit of a laugh fest as they thought it would be the last "trek" through the stars for that cast.

It was disapointing that the effects and some production could not be done as in the script - but hey thats Hollywood.

Well, maybe we'll see a reworked version one day.

There's another thread that talks about that.

Exactly. The loss of ILM made the special effect extravaganza which the movie was suppost to be and which the story relied on, made the movie a hunk of trash. According to my dad the camping scenes were the best parts of the movie. The God Altar was suppost to be amazing with special effects, but it didn't happen, also it was suppost to be the most visually exciting Star Trek Movie ever, but it never happend. Also Shatner wasen't the best Director nor Writer, I have to say his Books were some of the best ST Books ever, but his movie writing was aweful.

The whole God metaphor didn't bother me at all, especially since the god turned out being nothing more than a sham. I loved Sybok...so DC Fontana said that Spock was an only child...(never confirmed) Plus the idea that there are still some vulcans who embrace emotion yet aren't quite Romulans was a unique one.

It was our first real look at the 1701-A and at some more unique Starfleet military tactics. Plus the opening line by Scotty encapsulates the character so well.

"I think this ship was put together by monkeys, I mean she's got a fine engine, but half the doors won't open, and guess whose job it is to make it right!"

I never really understood why people disliked the film, outside of it treading on religious ground and the effects being a bit shoddy it was fun and exciting. At least I thought so.
Star Trek 5 was a good idea, but was poorly executed and was poorly executed. Some more time behind the typewriter alone would have helped some. More directoral experience, more organization, better continuity (not just with rek, but within the film itself).

I think James Cawley should re-do the film and iron out its problems.

Unfortunately not; Shatner has even offered up his own money to produce a remastered and fixed DVD, but Paramount has refused.
