Well Phlox wasn't gay in the series, he had 4 wives, unless they were all diversions.
I could see Malcom being a good strong charater who just happens to be gay.

no, actually it was Shore Leave....he had to settle for Yeoman Barrows. And, he got quite perturbed when he discovered it wasn't Spock giving him the back rub...

Just to bring new folks on this thread up to speed: if you Google "Gay Star Trek" you'll find a link to a site that does a pretty extensive rundown on how the powers that be at NBC, Paramount and other production heads (Burman) have avoided the issue in the past.
As I said in some of the previous threads, I think Star Trek has lost its cred' in relation to "pushing the social equality envelope." Virtually every major science fiction series on TV in the last 15 years has delt with the issue, but not Trek. It's now become almost an embarassment to the franchise, and is slowly gaining the reputation of being homophobic by default. It might not be an issue that J.J. needs to work into THIS particular movie, but if they do another series of Star Trek... I should hope to h*ll that they, the producers, would grow a pair and deal with it.

Torchwood is a good example of how it can be done well, and effectively. Why not have a charater that is great, and just happens to be gay? I don't mind seeing a charater kissing same gender in a normal love scene, as long as it's a well done, if not better, than any hethro scene.

I don't think such a small minority requires representation in a movie. There are FAR more vegetarians than there are gay people, and T'Pol is the closest we got to a vegetarian on screen.

I've seen estimates that 1 in 4 people are gay. I've seen estimates that 1 in 10 people are vegetarians.
