If the Andorian Imperial Guard was slow or reluctant to give Shran command of another ship, I could see Shran joining the NX-01 crew at Archer's request. If ENT continued with a fifth season, it would still be an Earth-based Starfleet because I doubt "These Are The Voyages" would have been made otherwise. I don't see the Starfleet of that time giving command of one of its ships to a member of alien race they only first encountered a few years ago...

What position could Shran have had aboard NX-01 then? Pretty much every major position was already filled. Perhaps if T'Pol stepped down from being first officer, but I just don't see that happening since it would be akin to a demotion of the character.

Maybe Shran would be security advisor--a position that would occasionally put him at odds with Reed as his duties as chief munitions officer would sometimes overlap. Shran as an ambassador, eh, maybe--but he seemed awfully willing to settle disputes with a disruptor, IMO...

I could see Sharn as an "advisor" maybe with honorary rank equal to Archer's. The Adnorians obviously have mapped more and seen more than Humans, so having him there on a "detached duty" for a time would make sense, especially since all the Humans have are Vulcan input/information on alot of things.

I could see Shran taking command in an emergency situations like a starship in the Romulan War of a Federation Space Station.

As and advisor, he wouldn't technically be "serving" in the Earth fleet.

While I am intellectually aware of plot and character challenges to such an arrangement I think it would have been fantastic.
