Default Kirk and Spock as kids?

Alright, i took a gander at the IMDB page for Star Trek 2009 and found that they have both a 'Young Kirk' and 'Adolescent Spock' characters listed in the cast and both are played by boys under the age of 10, who look like they could indeed fill the child counterparts of two iconic men. My question; what are they doing in the Star Trek movie? I know it said prequel, but come on.

Well, kid actors can only mean a few things.

1) Flashbacks
2) A dramatic opening sequence showing the modest roots of the greatest heroes of the 23rd century

Other than that i see no other purpose for having child versions of Kirk and Spock, unless they have a ridiculous plot like they go back in time or they fall in orange goo that degenerates their cells. Hey, i'm all for a Jimmy Kirk meeting tortured angst Spock when they were kids, but i'm pretty sure Vulcan aging processes would make that fairly impossible.

Thoughts?

The film is all about how these people came to be Starfleet officers, and what motivated them to do so. Perhaps some of them were inspired by things that happened to them during their childhood. What on earth is wrong with showing a snippet or two from each of the crewmembers childhood? Nothing, it won't hurt a thing. I kind of have Uhura pictured in my mind staring up at the sky on a dark African night, looking up at the stars and longing to see them up close, I see Kirk on a vacation to San Fransisco with his mom and dad, getting a glimpse of the Enterprise being built, and feeling some strange attraction to the ship. I see Spock on Vulcan learning to deal with the human emotions that don't affect the other Vulcan children, McCoy in Georgia going to a medical museum and being horrified at all the needles and sutures, and Scotty on the Streets of Aberdeen, building his own anti-gravity scooter or something. I have kind of a vision in my head of what each one of them would be like. What's so wrong about taking a brief look at it?

I fear i've been duped again by typing ambiguity.

I intended my tone to be more of amusement than scorn, but of course typing doesn't include mood.

I also have very distinct impressions of each character that i wouldn't mind seeing, however i must admit it is a somewhat overused literary/film device. I will be satisfied and nowhere near complaint if they find a way to make a more creative or at least interesting flashback sequence.

I hear you about that! I cannot tell you how many times i've been completely misunderstood on a message board for that very reason. There have been more board bru-ha-ha's over that fact than you can possibly imagine. That's why i'm a fan of smiley's, because they at least let the other members know if your kidding or not, and if you feel good or bad about it, even if they are sort of corny.

Yea ... my thoughts, too. A bit like Yesteryear, but inside the plot, not outstanding.

I have a vision of an opening sequence like this:

Some little spacefight with two little ships involved. You don't quite get it, but realize - uh, they're not the good ones. Both ships headed to one special sunsystem, one planet and the camera is zooming in ... quite fast.
***snip***
A little boy running through the desert, running as if he does this for his very life, panting, stumbling and running. Red Sands, rocks and mountains on the horizon - a red glaring sun. The cam zooms in and you see the pointed ears, the black dusty hair and some minor scratches from which green blood oozes. You don't know why this boy is running so very fast but then the cam makes a total overview and you can see a crashed little ship a distance away.
The boy is heading on in this direction, you can see him from behind and suddenly someone beams in, directly in front of the camera.
Whoever it is, he is direction a scanner towards the crash side and gives two short commands, is beaming out again.
Seconds later the crash side is exploding in a huge ball which leaves nothing but dust.
***snip***
The boy comes to a dead halt and watches amazed to the dust and smoke. A big grunty animal comes behind him, panting and rubbing the legs of the boy.
"So, I'Chiya, whatever it was, it's destroyed, but we'll have to take a look anyway, perhaps we can find something."
***snip***
Cam zoomes nearly two miles out and fokusses on the unknown foreigner who just beamed in nearby the crash side and has vaporized the little ship. He observed the boys action with his scanner and now we can see his face. He's nodding satisfied, answering more to himself. "You'll find nothing, because I know, that you shouldn't. All is, as it was. Spock to _____, beam up know. Heading Earth, Year 2245, Standard Time Scale."
***snip***
A little sleek ship leaves the big red planet and is heading into the vast black - we know it's heading to earth.

Fanfare and opening title ...

*one of my fantasies ... how it could begin*

I suppose so, i mean some of the older actors are making an appearance too. Perhaps we'll have a moment where all three age groups are standing beside each other to overcome some sort of Star Trek-like problem. Although, the implications of such an action would certainly incur some kind of time paradox and the characters would most likely implode on themselves.

BTW, amazing scene by Stef. Thank you for such a rich and graphic image.
