how many of you Americans have waited till today to file taxes. It drives me crazy when people wait for the las minute and then get all agro about it, being due today, they really do it to them selfs. I don't get it why some people wait so long

I filed as a soon as I got my W-2's. Sadly, I spent it just as fast.
Oh, and for those of you that are getting the Rebate Check in May(the stimulus package), keep in mind that it is JUST A LOAN! You have to pay that money back next year when you file taxes. |

yup...we spent some of our tax return on our blu-ray player....we don't wait around in my house.
However, Sir Num Nums, I believe you are wrong about the "rebate". We've checked carefully and this isn't like last time...this is just a "free money!" thing... Not sure how horrible the hit on the economy will be because of it, but at least I know that I won't have to pay it back on the next return like last time.

Starting from the top: many people who pay wait until the last minute to keep as much of the interest earned by their money as long as possible. Reverse the situation: those taxpayers who typically get big refunds are simply overpaying their tax rate, letting the government earn interest on that money all year long, then the Feds simply give the principal back in April and keep the earnings.
I waited to mail my check until Monday, which was close enough on interest earning but I easily avoided the ridiculous post office lines on the 15th. Seems the smartest play both ways. I have heard nothing about this "stimulus check" being a "loan" either, which makes sense considering how no one would be worried about Bush giving it if the deficit created by it would simply erase next year. But on the note of this tax break being a "loan", consider this morsel: recently it was figured that the Iraq War has cost every family in America about $16,500. If the bill for the war suddenly came due tomorrow, we'd all be screwed. So, figure you "owe" $16,500... and Bush is giving you back $300 or so in a rebate. Hardly a great deal, especially since it puts the country even deeper in debt, and most people like me will just pay bills with the money (so not much stimulus, either). Meanwhile, congrats on your new Blu, Eliza. Enjoy!

Taxes are important nonetheless. They help pay for keeping the city safe in terms of roads, traffic lights, etc. I know it may seem dumb, but in the long run, it's worth it.

Every year I do my taxes as soon as I have all the needed paperwork. If I owe then I file as late as i can. If I have a refund as soon as possible. This year I got back $30 from the federal and I owed my state $20. After paying turbotax I was in the negative. I waited till 4/02 to file over the internet.
I don't mind paying my taxes, but I think middle class like myself need more relief!! I could have nearly bought a car with what I paid in taxes last year when you include everything, not just income taxes. I hope to get my stimilus money soon so I can payoff a credit card. It won't seem like much considering I will be paying off a small monthly payment, but I must be strong and not buy another starship or something like a Blu-ray player (congrats Eliza). |
