Check out the TrekToday article. lol I take it this is what led to his famous tugging routine. Since it was a one-piece suit made out of Lycra and doing damage to Picard's spine, he and his chiropractor told Paramount to come up with a new suit by the second season or a lawsuit would have been given to the studio. Of course, they agreed, and this is how we got the one we now identify with for TNG.

Wow, I never noticed a difference in the suits between the first and second seasons, but it's been awhile since I've seen it.

This 1st season uniforms were VERY ugly. They look ed like they had a giant wing on each shoulder.

It actually changed between seasons two and three. According to the article, Stewart says, "We actually got rid of it after the second season thanks to my chiropractor,..." - and visually in the third season episodes, you'll notice the cut of the neckline has changed. They added a subtle collar to the neckline, and allowing them to move the rank pips from the yolk up onto the collar.
