I suppose in a way it was actually a somewhat fitting end for Kirk. It was pretty clear that Kirk cared for retirement just as much as he cared for being an admiral parked behind a desk. Some of the parts of the movie that were not in the final cut showed that he didn't care much for retirement.

To this day I'm still surprised that William Shatner decided to kill off his character, and still be upset to not be included in "XI".

The decision to off Kirk was actually Rick Berman's (and DS9/nuBSG's Ronald D. Moore was the one who wrote it).

I sill think there was no way could Shatner have predicted that 14-15 years later, there would have been another way Kirk could have been brought back. As they say, hindsight is always 20/20. I'm sure if Rick Berman was doing Star Trek XI, there wouldn't have been any talk of Kirk coming back in any form...

Meh, well if Kirk was in the film, I think people would want Shatner to star in the movie and not Chris Pine.

But in an emergency situation, you would need to send someone who knows exactly where the equipment...not just the room...is. And I doubt Kirk would have knowledge that specific on this particular ship's design.

Yeah, and don't forget how Kirk couldn't find his way around HIS Enterprise in TMP after it was remodeled without asking for directions! He's not exactly great with maps.
