Harriman was less prepared than the Enterprise B. How did this guy get his own command?

I think in reality it was just a split second desicion by the director to include Alan Ruck in this feature. In the Trek world, I think Starfleet felt it was time for a younger commander and see how he would react under pressure.

I guess he should of taken the Kobayashi Maru. From the looks of it he never faced the "no win scenario" and Mathew Broderick wasn't around to save him...only Kirk. I think I'd rather see Ferris Bueller sucked out into the Nexus.

I bet he tried to back the Enterprise B all the way back to space dock hoping his dad wouldn't notice that Kirk died.

Well in the Novels released later... Isn't it pretty much stated that Harriman's father ADMIRAL Blackjack Harriman arranged for his son to get the command? Probably more for his own ego than for his son's sake. Look at Capt. Harriman. He KNOWS he really isn't the right man to be in that seat, as much as he wants to be. In fact I give him credit for having the sense to give De facto command to Kirk rather than try to ride it down in flames out of his own pride.
