Honestly, this situation is a no-holds-barred plot device. Then again, Trek has always been full of these 'forced moments', so I guess this was just a case of living up to the tradition, huh...?

(*Grin*)
THAT I can agree to!

Kirk made repairs as well. Even though in this image he's not working on the Enterprise, he is making repairs in the damaged U.S.S. Constellation in 2267. I'm sure Kirk knew technical things about a starship, however not every little detail like Scotty.

Again, I can agree with that!

Same class of starship as his own. I am sure he knew a few things about Constitution class starships, but in a crisis (which the ship he was on was not exactly in a crisis when he was making those repairs) you need someone who knows the ship inside and out. And when the repairs he did were done (with help from Scotty btw) the ship barely ran.

I never said he didn't have a cursory knowledge. But in the end he wasn't the best candidate to do what needed to be done.

Still nothing will convince you, or I, to change our postions. But we both can agree it was a dramatic decison for the purposes of the script, right?

Who says any world is real?

As the old song goes, "...nothing is real..."

Kirk (in Generations) was actually who I was talking about in my initial post.

Yep, just like ah said.

IMO, basic starship operations and maintenance is one of the required courses at Starfleet Academy for every midshipman. Got to know the difference between a bus-B circuit board that controls a phaser bank and the data transfer links from a lateral sensor pallet (or something like that)...

Yep. That is precisely why Kirk was doing the job.
