apparently they both do, it's like a pool of creative material they can both draw on, the thing that either 'owns' is the distribution rights (and I guess the development rights, i.e. only paramount can develop a Trek Movie, and only CBS a show) it's really not that confusing if you just think of it that they both share the creative material that the shows and movies are based on
