Neelix was often a very annoying character. Not quite Wesley Crusher level, but close!

Kes got on my nerves often too, especially when they started trying to make her into something supernatural.

I find that I'm more forgiving of Neelix than I am of Wesley. That character is one of the worst in TV history IMO.

He is just an ordinary kid. Well, perhaps a bit smarter than an ordinary kid but I don't see what's wrong with that. Unlike Sisko's son who just hangs around all day doing nothing Wesley is a productive member of the crew.
Intelligent, hardworking and friendly. Perfectly matches TNG.

About Neelix, I can see that his over-friendliness might cause suspicion but then again he is an alien and behaves (and cooks) like one. Really alien aliens are rare in Trek.

Jake is a believable character, Wesley is a poorly constructed one. Not only don't I like him, I don't believe the character. He doesn't come across as real, and it's not because he's a genius. There are geniuses in the real world. It's that he is simply not a believable character to me. It's just bad writing. And as for Neelix, he just sort of grates my nerves. It's not his friendliness that bothers me, Kim is friendly and I like him. It's just that he is annoying. Some people just are.

I actually liked Wesley because I was younger than his character when TNG started so it seemed to be like such an adventure to have been on a ship like that as a teenager.

But Jake I liked as well, precisely because he was just an ordinary teenager. Not stupid or underachieving as such, but a normal regular kid in a very different environment that took his adventures in different directions. Got a little sidetracked by bad influences once or twice but found his role there as well. He was as good a kid as Wesley (who spent too many of his teenage years trying to be what everyone else expected him to be thanks to his early intelligence which just meant his angst took longer to manifest and seemed too scared to make decisions for himself on big matters) was. They just had a different upbringing.

Neelix however, doesn't have many advantages.

I liked that aspect of Jake. I also liked that he did his own thing. It wasn't his dream to be in Starfleet. The "everybody who's anybody wants to be in StarFleet" cliche in Trek was tired. Jake was by far the best of the child characters.

Indeed. With thousands of worlds, inhabited and uninhabited and societies there are myriad satisfying and productive lives to be lived outside Starfleet.

It naturally wouldn't be for everyone and that would not at all mean they weren't smart, good folks.

Or you could do a Tom Paris, wash out of the service and fight for whoever paid you bar bills! He seemed to enjoy doing that for a while at least! It may even beat doing the Jovian Run.
