Would they have had two box office hits on their hands or would Trek have been decimated?

Decimated.
Star Trek can't stand up to Marvel The Audience always sides with the hit rather than seeing two films at once.

It's certain The Avengers would have won. It's been a rare style of juggernaut that has definitely taken people away from other films.
However, If Star Trek had had the same level of positive reviews and good word of mouth it may not have been entirely disastrous financially. It would never have came close to what it did earn. But the films that have opened against The Avengers the last couple weekends have not had the luxury of good reviews anyway, and both Dark Shadows and Battleship in particular had very negative word of mouth prior to release that was also working against them. Something Star Trek did not have to contend with. I don't think it would have been decimated................but it would have suffered.

I think, inevitably, that when movies like Battleship, Battle: Los Angeles, and such come out, they end up getting compared to movies like Independence Day and District 13 because of the whole "been there, done that" attitude.
As for Star Trek if it would've gone up against the Avengers...well...I think Trek still would've fared well. Perhaps not quite as well as Avengers, but it certainly would've done respectable box office....and in truth, I think it still would've done box office that far and away blows out all the previous Trek films/overblown episodes. |

Yeah, I think those comparisons inevitably exist because alien invasion films are dime a dozen.............but then having seen Battleship and Battle: Los Angeles I think they are justifiably abysmal films. I truly do. Even as a commonplace genre some just do it better than others.
Although re Battleship it's less it's outright stupidity that makes it bad. It's that it figured it could just copy Transformers and Bay's style and assumed people would just turn up with no effort. It seemed like such an intentionally obvious cynical play to be copying that I actually get an extra shiver of pleasure that it's bombing. Harsh, I know. But I think it deserves it.

The Avengers made more in ten days than Star Trek XI did during its entire theatrical run.

It's pure folly to believe on any strech of the imagination that Trek couldn't have faired any where close to what it did up against a giant like Avengers. Marvel simply has everyone on board from all ages. The only Genre it doesn't capture is the chick flick niche and Trek could never touch that either.
Planning for WHEN a movie comes out is just as pivotable as the movie itself. Trek started off the movie summer. This is just like a music concert. Trek Intro-ed Revenge of the Fallen by a month rather than choosing to come after a potential block buster... Its all the same audience and movies are expensive. People really don't see movies back to back enmasse. So a block buster is ALWAYS going to steal viewers away from even a good niche movie like Trek if placed after because the fame of the block buster will carry over to the following weeks and even worse Trek could easily have been swept away in Avengers rank of actors. Some of the things Trek had going for it were it's position in the summer. -Names that audienced had recently heard of or like from movies like Harold and Kumar, Heroes, Avatar etc. -A fair amount of suspense from being backed up for a year and a half -being the first Trek Movie 7 years (or something) -Big named JJ Abrams -Excellent advertising (and miss advertising ) The real question is how will the public view the sequel? With suspense or with a shrug?

Well, we won't know that until May 2013.

There's a lot of pressure on JJ to deliver the goods the second time around. To be honest I don't think the new movie will much different from the first by way of tone, mood, action and its fast pace. It's an action flick set in space. I believe it will do okay, but it will not be an outstanding film by any means.

I haven't seen too many different styles from JJ.
I think he's going to have to shake things up on the sequel and actually get some suspense for the build up for the last movie. Ultimately his tiding things up neatly with Nero's death may be the miscal
