If you were Kirk during the rescue attempt on the Enterprise-B, would you have stayed in the center seat and let Harriman go down to deflector control, or would you have made the same choice Kirk made and go down yourself? In all honesty, although I'm sure it would seem very selfish, I personally would have just let Harriman go down there himself. Or heck, why not tell Scotty since he is an engineer?

Kirk realizes that his place is no more in the big seat. He did the right thing which is what the movie is all about, doing the right thing and not caring about yourself or your stupid dreams. It is a healthy antidote to Western individualism with some Hollywood-untypical quiet heroics.
About your question, no idea what I would have done. I cannot imagine to be a Starfleet captain so I cannot imagine what I would do if I were one. |

I would have thought technically it's the sort of thing that someone would have normally been sent to do, but it's a while since I saw Generations so I can't recall all the details of why Harriman was going to go (and thus why Kirk had to swap with him).
Beyond the script needing him to, of course.

I think Scott should have gone, but Kirk should have let Harriman keep the centre seat.

I thought the scene was contrived nonsense. You'd let the damage control teams do their job.

Again, sorry for the typos. I was in the box office at my job and was using my DROID lol. But yeah, in the end, it was a scene just to get Kirk in the Nexus so the "story" could continue. I quote story because the overall film was quite a mess in my opinion.

Only a fool thinks that his place as a command officer is where an engineer should be...
Scotty should have been down there First and foremost. Kirk wasn't a bridge officer so he could have went too...but he's no engineer...and Hell there really should have been a lieutenant that should have been directed to that task who was closer than 14 decks. Where was the man that was supposed to be on station?
