I like that he is happy (let's look how happy he is one he reaches old age, becomes sick and is in pain) and who doesn't like Thoreau's Walden but I don't like the notion that this is a way for everybody. Living a pre-modern life is no option, we are caught in modernity and have to address our problems in this framework.
You also find this idea of getting out of modernity among some environmentalists and in some science-fiction.

I wouldn't go as far as living in a cave personally (I like a mattress and heating far too much, plus TV) but you can still just do the ordinary stuff like watch your budget.

Default Maybe something a little more like this?

From the air the 250,000 mineshafts littering Coober Pedy and surrounds resemble a beach full of soldier crab holes. And like the crabs, many of the 3500 residents in the largest opal-mining centre in Australia live underground away from the scorching heat - and so can guests at the award-winning Desert Cave Hotel where 19 of the 50 rooms are beneath the surface.
