Teleportation seems like a misnomer for something that has more to do with quantum computation than Scotty or The Fly.

The idea is that by being able to transmit data on the quantum state of a particle, you could recreate that particle somewhere else.

And as you pointed out the eerie thing is that it makes no sense to us laymen who think in Newtonian terms, i.e. if you wanna transit something from A to B you gotta actually move it.

Would it require less energy to recreate it at a distance point rather than to move it the intervening distance?

No idea. All I know about this stuff is what Einstein said, that it's spooky action at a distance.
