Does anyone know what happened to the phaser that Chekov threw to interrogator on the USS Enterprise in 1986? I could have sworn there was a story following that incident somewhere. Or even a fan fiction.

Someone pressed the wrong buttons, it exploded near the nuclear reactor, the Enterprise exploded and WWIII broke out. And, guess what, we can blame a Russkie.

I imagine nothing happened, at least nothing major. Had they reverse engineered it and figured out it's secrets, even if only in part, that would have had drastic effects on their timeline and they would not have returned to the same 23rd century they left. Perhaps they looked at it, and since it wasn't working, assumed it was just a prop used by a mentally ill Russian and that was that.
