Did Sisko enjoy commanding Deep Space 9 for seven years? I ask myself that question because more often then not when there is a transmissions coming in, or if Sisko doesn't want to be bothers, he always has a sigh of annoyance. Commanding a space station is far more stressful than commanding a starship. I couldn't even begin to imagine all the stress involved.

So, I guess my question is, *why did he accept the post of being on the station rather than give it to someone else?

**I understand this is a television show and he is the star, and of course with no star there would be no show, but I am talking in-universe.

Is there not something in 'Emissary' that speaks to the fact that he was assigned there and that was it?

Starfleet is a service after all, you don't get to always cherry pick and do the role you want. I got the impression at the start he was assigned there whether he wanted to be or not.

But it's a while since I saw the pilot.

Same here, it's been a long time since I've watched DS9. I need to watch them again. As to Sisko, I think it's as simple as him going where he's told to go.

Sisko did definitely enjoy his post on DS9 but unlike Kirk or Picard he also had a life beyond work. Compared to them he is more of an everyman who is happy when a day's work is done, when he can spend some time with his Jake or Yates or watch Baseball. Sure, he is not the prototypical everyman like O'Brien but he is definitely not the usual larger-than-life Starfleet captain either.

One would assume he would have been offered the post, just like Ryker was offered a command of his own ship. Though probably not a direct request on his part.

There was some backstory on Sisko about how he wanted to resign his commission after his wife died and before he was offered command of the station and a promotion to full Commander.

It's true that Sisko did sigh a lot but as commander he's essentially the adminstrator of the station and there was a significant diplomatic burden to the role.

I think in the beginning the station was no special place (which is also why they sent a Commander and not a Captain), and pretty much no one was really happy to be there, except Bashir who liked the adventure of it. All that changed when they found the wormhole.

I'm sure he enjoyed commanding the station, but certain aspects of any job can be exasperating.

In Sisko's first meeting with Picard in the pilot, he obviously didn't want the assignment and was prepared to resign from Starfleet. By the time of his second meeting with Picard he had fallen in love with it and seemed to remain so throughout the series, once calling DS9 "this place where I belong" and even planning to build a house on Bajor and retire there.

He expressed his discomfort with his role as the Emissary, yet once he relinquished that position to someone else, he jumped at the chance of regaining it once he saw what a poor job his replacement was doing (DS9: Accession).
