I wonder how big the maintenance crew would need to be. When you think about it, Lucas was relatively smart to go with clones and droids otherwise you would wonder where the millions of folk a structure that size would need.

Speaking in the fiction of Star Wars:
The Death Star itself was also built by slave workers and imprisoned designers and engineers. A majority of their construction force were enslaved Wookiees.

If you want a good read (although it's likely considered Expanded Universe, and not exactly canon), check out "Death Star", a novelization that covers the construction of the Death Star; a story which weaves in and out of and around Episode IV quite deftly.

Yeah, I figured slave labour would probably have been the only other way to accomplish it but aside from implications resulting from the fact that the Empire was the Empire I didn't recall any direct references to enslaved workforces...............unless you go back to the general idea of the Empire, of course.
