Yeah it definitely starts out vibing like 'The X-Files' but (and it's hard to say too much because I've seen up to season three now) while it does then go into having parallel realities it does it in a really nice way.
And I think that so far it's kept a tighter leash on it's own mythology (so far, I mean, I've heard some grumbles about season 4 online but I've been avoiding too many S4 spoilers) than 'The X-Files' managed to. There's stuff in season 3 that pays off little things done in season 1 that seemed insignificant at the time but which make sense still within that mythology. Like seeds planted that finally all come to fruition in season 3. It's also real crazy at times - 'X-Files' had it's far out eps, but 'Fringe' pushes it even farther a lot of the time. But mostly gets away with it. I find it a lot of fun. Not too serious but one of those shows that's silly technically but interesting enough thematically and in terms of the relationships between the characters.

The character of Walter is a hoot, while also being the sort of tragic character of the lot. And I like Anna Torv.

I'm pretty sure I saw in a commercial for the show the World Trade Center in the NY skyline. I suppose 9/11 did not happen in whatever universe that was.

It did (or a variation of it), but in the alternate the WTC survived and another site was attacked instead.
