Considering the 13 year age gap between Pine and Del Toro we can dismiss Del Toro playing Gary Mitchell… so if JJ says he’s not Khan then Kang is certainly a possibility. That’s my bet

Could be a retooling of the TOS episode, though the TOS episode would surely need to be redone if a possible remake of TWOK were to ever happen some years down the line...if ever. It WAS quite a number of years between TOS Khan and TMP Khan, so a timeline of at least 18-20 years would be needed to establish any follow-up episode/sequel.

I would say that if not Khan in ST XII, then at the end of it, during credits, having a clip of BB leaving Earth at the end of the Eugenics War(s) would be a nice teaser.
Somehow I could stomach and be somewhat interested in a remake/rewrite of the TOS episode into a movie, but still.......I think that it would take a big dose of Pepto (or a really good preview) for me to be able to really get interested.

.......at the least...Chekov would be on board the "E" this time and take care of the problem of Khan "remembering" him if a TWOK remake is made...lol

If I got away with remaking Khan and TWOK after the previous movie already did the same I could not resist to the temptation to test whether my audience is really stupid enough to not notice a Khan hat-trick.
But then again JJA and his minions are not as evil as I am.

At this point it hard to know were their going with this. The inclusion of Alice Eve makes me think that she's a prime candidate for the role of Edith Keeler or one of Mudd's women. Del Toro, if not Khan then possibly as the Klingon Chang.

If Keeler, then you-know-who would possibly be back on board to see that his story was done in the way he intended it to be in TOS. DToro could be part of THAT story, possibly as a villainous foil in the story.

BUT...that would be ANOTHER story involving time travel right after STXI...
so I would say no to a redux to TCOTEOF just for that fact...???
