Of course now I'm watching another contender in 'The Hangover, Part 2' (I've been using Lovefilm to catch up on flicks from last year I never went to the effort of seeing in cinemas this weekend and sorely regretting it) which is about as redundant.

Well, actually, I do think that will only apply as long as Depp is there. It's kinda his show.

I keep actually meaning to re-rent 'Cuthroat Island' to see if it was as terrible. Because that was the last big Pirate themed film I can recall pre-Depp. My memory says it actually was not as bad as it was made out to be but it was probably 1995 the last I saw it.
I totally agree that it is nothing but shallow entertainment.
I guess I like it because I grew up with Monkey Island and because I have a weakness for playful characters. I also love Downey in Ironman or Sherlock Holmes although the movies are pretty dumb action flicks. You could call it the Hamlet phenomenom, without the main characters everything falls, respectively in this case would fall, apart.

About the fourth movie, sure, it is not as good as the first one and most likely no future movie will be as fresh and witful but at least it doesn't suffer from the lack of focus on the main character of the second and third movie. Before the last movie I feared that the series might die the 'character overflow' death of superhero movies.

Thanks for the hint, the trailer (and Geena Davis) look pretty good.

I wouldn't set the bar too high on 'Island' - it's THE biggest financial turkey of all time!!! There are not many films manage to virtually kill the career of the main star, the director AND sink the company that produced it.

Probably for reasons I've simply forgotten over time.

On the horror front, I checked out 'Insidious' tonight which was actually not that bad or ineffective. Even if it did go a bit off the rails in the last half hour. Unusually enough for a horror it got me a little jumpy and spine tingly hair on the neck rising sorta way in some scenes.

I still have not seen that one, I'll have to check it out. I'm a little behind in movies lately.
