I don't like that at all, he should stay dead.

Well, it was already strongly implied at the end of the arc with those witches and the other devilish looking fellow that Maul is alive. I doubt that the series treats him as cartoonish as Phantom Menace so I couldn't care less about his magical revival, not to mention that it probably works fine in the respective story with necromancy being a Sith specialty.

It's just such a weak cliche at this point. Oh, this guy was a popular character so we'll bring him back. Doesn't matter that he's dead!

What does the death of a character even mean if they just dust them off whenever they want?

Lucas has said that he has been inspired by Tolkien's Dark Lord when he created Darth Vader. Like Sauron/Morgoth the Sith also corrupt and manipulate. Take Vader, his transformation into a cyborg resembles mutilated elves/Ents who have become orcs/trolls. Like Sauron aka the Necromancer (his name in The Hobbit) who unnaturally prolongs the lives of the human ringbearers Sidious also unnaturally prolongs the life of Vader.
He is basically a living dead until he breaks free, redeems himself and dies in Episode VI.

This guy manipulates life and death so reviving a former apprentice is pretty natural. I mean, gee, that the Sith are living dead is a key point that distinguishes them from the Jedi who have a natural relation to life and death ("mourn them do not"). Wars is about zombies, it's merely a bit more subtle and sophisticated than Night of the Living Dead.

I get the whole twisting of nature thing, but this whole bringing back old characters from the dead thing is just tired. I'd much rather see them focus their energy in new and interesting characters, instead of contrived stories about characters best left in the past.

I also think that the scenes you reference in Episode III are more in tune with a Vampiric character as opposed to a Zombie.
