I may be premature, but has there been any indication whether or not the TNG blu ray will contain the non remastered episodes the way TOS did?

I would guess not, since technically they're only rebuilding the show. Even in cases where new CG may be used , I believe the intent is to re-create the original effects as closely as possible. I.e., you're already watching the original version, as closely as they could make it in HD.
In the case of 'TOS', I believe 'remastered' refers (or should refer) to the HD project itself regardless of which version of the effects you select to watch. Since the original 35mm film is what's been remastered. |

Probably shouldn't expect it then. I've still to get the rental through. I was tempted to go and buy it after all but then I couldn't find a store that stocked a single copy of it within my reasonable search radius. I could order it online (in fact I would need to) but think I will just go back to my rental option since it's almost a sure thing I'll end up buying the first season set anyway later in the year.

Yeah, it's probably good rental material.
I wasn't too impressed with 'Farpoint', probably because my fondest memories of that episode come from a time when the rental VHS tape (with the '91 TUC teaser at the beginning of it) already looked crystal clear to my eyes. The most striking examples of HD clarity (such as the Farpoint station and the jellyfish it morphs into) have already been seen online anyway. At the end of the day, I prefer TMP to this episode. But 'Sins of the Father' and 'Inner Light' are both a major improvement in HD, as both of them fall apart on my flatscreen when viewed at SD resolution. Frankly I can't even see holding onto my DVDs once we get the BluRays. Maybe my nephew will like them. Last edited by samwiseb : 02-11-2012 at 03:02 PM. |

I have to say, I probably have the warmest feelings for 'Farpoint' over the other pilots.
Still haven't had it through on my rental service yet. It's always the same when there's one in particular I want to catch and then they keep sending through other titles first!!

Even though it's a 'high priority' on my list I still can't seem to get the darn things sent through to me!

New info on the S1 BluRay set.
They're including original episode promos. Nice. HD footage from 'Where No One...' is not to be missed either. |

Maybe it was playing an internet clip on my four year old laptop but that didn't look a lot different to me from when I play my DVD's through the Blu-ray player.
But I know that other footage did look much different so I'm not meaning anything to much by that right now. On better news, the HD sampler has finally risen to the top of my rental list and has been dispatched today which means I can spend this coming holiday weekend at least in part checking out these three eps properly and commenting on them. This will decide whether I'm likely to plan to buy the BR releases or not.

Mostly it just looked sharper. I couldn't tell it was HD, which is another reason why I think this streaming gunk is overrated. But I suspect even an SD copy of the HD remaster would look sharper. Anyway, I've been sold ever since I got the sampler.
For whatever reason, DVDs on my BluRay player (often) seem to come out looking worse. Especially if there's a lot of grain in the picture. |
