Ya think? Looking at some of the FX from the original series, it could stand some enhancement due to going HD, much as TOS was. Exterior yes, with some cleaning up on interior shots.......maybe.

I don't really mind most of the effects in early TOS as such (there's the usual matter of model scaling, and they 'could' re-imagine some of the alien planet cities that were all the same matte painting used a dozen times and reduce the re-use of some of the models used over and over as dfferent alien ships) but overall the effects really aren't entirely that bad.

Plus it would require more elaborate CGI to redo the effects to 'match' the modelwork etc in TNG, than it did for the simpler TOS.

And you have 99 extra episodes to pay for the re-mastering on!

While the title suggests that this is definitive these are just rumours. High costs, small benefits, sounds unlikely to me.

Even if they did them all, Im not even sure I would buy them. I appreciate Paramounts interest in yet more re-releases to make people keep buying, but for the price the Blu-rays would be.

Since the series was shot in a different format, and often people stand and move between the effect picture and the camera, remastering with CGI would be much more difficult than it was for TOS.

When I play my current TNG dvd's through my Blu-ray player the interiors (sets, actors etc) don't come up that much better, in fact I'd say a little worse actually, but the effects aren't so bad.

A true remastering would involve reassembling and rescanning the original 35mm film elements for HD, as well as creating new special effects specific to that format.

Otherwise you're looking at an upconversion from the SD masters. A professional upconversion would look much better than anything yours or my BluRay player can produce off of DVD, but might not be worth most people's purchase money given the sheer number of episodes/seasons TNG has.

As for a remastering, I can definitely see it. This would take a lot more time and money than remastering TOS, since post-production for TNG was done in SD video. DS9 and VOY, probably not a chance. New effects to rival the original SD templates might be 'easier' or 'harder' to do compared to TOS, for reasons that are too long to get into right now. If they cheap out though, it would be more obvious this time around.

If I were them I would either start with the middle seasons, or prioritize the episodes according to popularity like they did with TOS. Just so the sales more 'accurately' reflect public demand up front, before the project gets aborted mid-series. Going by seasons (3-5, 2, 6, 1, 7) would be my personal preference, since having full season sets allows BluRay to be brought into the equation sooner (as opposed to just iTunes and ****ing 'streaming'; I get really sick of all the "your BluRays are obsolete already; 'streaming' is the future" talk. I will never acknowledge the end of physical media).

I'm unsure on the whole physical media future.

I know a few people who stream a bit of stuff, but a lot still like to buy their 'favourite' films and TV series still physically.

Anyway - re TNG, maybe they could pick a dozen or so 'Prime Candidate' episodes and work on them then do a test release to gauge the reaction and sales potential for then going into the full seasons.

Although, I'm not really sure that (hypothetically) adding scenes of Wolf 359 would necessarily make 'The Best of Both Worlds' any better as an episode. It would just add more bangs they couldn't do the first time around.
