Guys, being the one who re-started that thread, I felt that the topic was too important to just let it die when the nasty comments started. The individuals who kept pulling the thread into some rather nasty, graphic territory have been warned by the mods about keeping things appropriate in the future. In a few days, after everyone has backed off of it for a bit, I may try starting it up again, only this time as a general Trek question, rather than something specific to the new movie. Redshirt, I think you nailed it on the head. The problem isn't hatred, it's ignorrance. The only way to fight ignorrance is to...keep talking.

Fan-

As much as I think your motives for doing it are to be applauded, I think we'll just go back there and act silly as a group.

But if you start, I shall post of course. Don't know if you don't try!

I think any thread that encourages intelligent discussion is worth trying. Might it dissolve into squabbling? Obviously, we've seen that it might. But that doesn't mean we don't make the effort. I think Star Trek without "deep topics" would be sort of "Star Trek Light" and I don't know that we want that....

- Di Troi -

I think they're referring to the thread in the new movie section where someone asked other people's opinion about introducing a gay character in the next movie.

Personally, I started reading the thread the day after it was started. I like a really good debate just like most people here but I didn't get involved in that one because I knew for a fact that it would get nasty. Anything about race, religion, sexual orientation and sometimes politics or even William Shatner () is bound to get heated to the point of nastiness, unfortunately. I knew it would be impossible to have a completely civilized debate/discussion on the subject so I purposely stayed away.

Oh, sure. You can start ANY topic, and if people want to, they can sabotage it, or hijack it, or (as in the case of the gay character threads) use it to spew nasty misinformation. It can't be helped. But the attempt ot having an honest, intelligent discussion should be made. Otherwise, the site becomes nothing but fluff like "Why are there spinning fans on the nacelles in the trailer?" talk.

I think fans are capable of having intelligent conversations.
