I wonder what will happen to Superman Returns in the way of canon, and young Jason White; will it just be ignored?

It will be ignored. The new one is a reboot.

Yep. And that sucks major donkey yarbles! Superman Returns was a very good movie and Brandon Routh was the best Supes since Christopher Reeve. It's too bad he won't get to reprise his role in this unnecessary reboot. And I'm not impressed with the new guy. He just doesn't "look" like Superman to me.

I'm not sure how they are going to get around the issue.
If they don't make it a continuation of Superman, Superman 2 and Superman Returns (since it seems everyone has left out 3 and 4 of the continuity, even though SR doesn't totally match it's not a million miles away either) then they are either going to have to do the basic story establishing first (Krypton, Martha & John, Smallville and all that jazz) and then do a story - which is then just going back over AGAIN territory that the last film was partly criticised for doing, even though thematically it fit the film to do so. Or, jump into the action and get started, assume that everyone in the audience who will see the film already 'knows' his background and thus doesn't need to be reminded for the umpteenth time what it is. Which I can see the appeal of, since it AVOIDS retreading overall territory but then which I also think is sloppy in terms of the film's own internal structure. If you're doing a proper(ish) reboot (which I'm not 100% sure if this is or not) then you have to cover the starting points of everything first. IMO, it's utter slop to try to do otherwise, and detrimental to the franchise before it even gets started. Which is why - for better or worse - Casino Royale, Batman Begins, Star Trek etc had to do that with their reboots and get it out the way first. Get the foundations sorted, and the rest will be fine. Or maybe they have developed a third way to do it.
