Default Whiskey differences

What is the difference between Irish/Scottish/Tennessee/Kentucky/Canadian/... Whisk(e)y?
I compared small samples of Jim Beam and Tullamore Dew, and thought they taste so similar I couldn't tell them apart. So is there a difference at all?

Sometimes you can tell more difference by adding a splash of water. It takes the edge off the alcohol and lets the flavor and aroma through.

All whisky has some similarity, but within that is a wide range. For instance, a Canadian Whisky will have a very "clean" taste while a lot of Scotches have a more earthy, smokey type of flavor. Bourbon and Tennessee Whisky also tends to have an earthy, smoky quality to it.

Scotch in itself comes in a wide range actually. Different distilleries in different regions across Scotland tend to have their own characteristics.

How should it be diluted? 1:1?

No, maybe 2.5-3:1. Not too much, just enough. Trial and error will tell you how much is right for you.

You could pour a shot over an ice cube and let the ice melt a bit.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a big whiskey drinker, but I've done some tasting. This is what works for me. YMMV.
