I can remember what made me switch over though...it was when I was playing my video games.

At the time, I had a 20 inch CRT TV/DVD/VCR combo unit, and a 24" Hi-Def tv (only capable of 1080i at best, but still a good picture). My roomie and I were playing Halo 2 (which wasn't even a hi-def game at the time).

I remember after a match, we were comparing awards we'd gotten. I was letting him use my HDTV which was in the living room, whilst I used my CRT in my bedroom. When I looked at my awards on my TV, and then went out into the living room to see his, I noticed, even at just 480p, the increase in clarity. I could actually make out edge details on the awards. I went back to my room, and looked at the CRT I was using. The awards were a lot of unfocused circles. I sat there thinking "Damn, I'm jealous of my own HDTV."

From then on out, it was HDTV all the way for me.

This new high definition stuff is great and when you use it as output device for all your stuff, TV, DVDs and games, it makes a lot of sense to buy something decent.
I am just a cranky, technology-hyperconservative dinosaur with a 10yr old pooter and a 15y old TV.

Ahhh...the eccentricities of mad science.

Conversely, speaking with some friends of mine on other forums where HDTV might come up, I can kinda identify with their individual preferences.

Some folks don't like that uber-pristine, "video" look when it comes to movies. They like the film texture that makes a movie a "movie". They want their movies to look like movies.

I've heard some people voice that concern when it comes to clean-ups of older films. Most modern films - I guess since about 2008 anyway have been kinda filmed with HD in mind so they will always look super sharp and pristine. Especially the effects based films. CGI and HD go beautifully! But so does good landscape work as well. Any good DP will make whatever kinda film they use look the best it can.

The oldest film I've watched on a specific Blu-Ray release was the region 2 Psycho special edition I bought and I thought that it looked great fter 50 years - still a bit grainy in places but it came with a stonking new 5.1 sound mix that added so much to the experience of watching the film.

Dialogue was clearer (including a line spoken by Norman at the very end that was made so the original audience couldn't hear it at the time because they were concerned about the percieved sexual connotations of Norman's transvestitism), and everything sounded just so much better!

But not all transfers of older films are well done - some of newer films aren't all that well done either!

I had heard about some movies that do not transfer all that well to Hi Def because of the limitations of the filmstock at the time.

But I will say this: One movie I am anxious to check out in Hi-Def is Star Trek The Motion Picture.

I remember sometime back gushing over how beautiful the film looked on my old 60hz HDTV, and that the film quality was such that it looked like it was shot within the last couple of years.

Now, with my 120Hz, I'm anxious to see how well it translates. I can only imagine it would be stunningly gorgeous, especially after having watched "Balance of Terror" in true Hi-Def.

Star Trek the Motion Picture is FRAKKIN' BEAUTIFUL in Hi-Def!

I thought it looked stunning on my old 60Hz TV.....it's a total knockout on my newer TV. Now I'm anxious to see the rest o' me Trek movies like this.
