I wholeheartedly agree that the next film should avoid having any original cast members, or truthfully, cast members from any pre-existing show. Let the new crew take over, and stand on their own merits.

Couldn't agree more. If this is the direction Trek is going in, with this new alt. crew, if you will, then go all the way.

I'm just wondering what incarnation Trek will take on TV again. I mean it was always TV first, then movies. Now it's the reverse. I seriously can't see this nutrek as it's called going to TV in any form. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Trek when and if it returns to TV which hopefully it will.

I think a TV spinoff would be like the Stargate or Buffy series... acknowledging the general story of the films but not necessarily the details. If it is involving the TOS characters, they would almost certainly be re-casted again. And the show would probably have a greater emphasis on the sci-fi and military aspects of ST.

For example, you might avoid any direct references to Kirk's rapid promotion in ST09, just so you wouldn't have to deal with the implications of that type of thing being possible in a military setting. Or you might put more scientific emphasis into any 'flashbacks' showing Vulcan's destruction, so that when we see it again it's from a more TNG-style perspective.

This is assuming the series even committed itself to taking place in any pre-established universe. It doesn't have to, really. You might get up to third season or so before deciding to do a story that involves the Vulcans (or any other surprises the coming films might have in store for us) in some major way.

If they put Trek back on tv it will inevitably fall into the same rut that killed it the last time: boring plotlines, uninteresting one-dimensional characters, boring plotlines ...

The next time Trek dies it will be for real.

Well not if they get someone who knows how to write a TV show. Whatever they do, it'll have to be new. They can't revisit the '90's and try to reclaim Trek's TV glory days. The only way to make it work is something new. Have no idea what that would be, but you're right. If they fall into those same old cliched story lines and stereo-typed Trek characters then Trek on TV is doomed.

They could potentially avoid a lot of those problems just by bringing in creative people who are not bound by the whole "this is the way televised ST has always done it in the past" mode of thinking.

It's time to let the new cast do it's thing without a net.

Well, the new Trek series which might emerge in this decade will not have much in common with post TNG Trek, after all it is unlikely that any writers or producers will come back.
The question is how much it will have to do with the current TOS movie(s) and to be blunt, I hope that it will be totally emancipated from them as well as any other previous Trek incarnations.

Well, not totally emancipated in the sense of starting from scratch or not caring about the most general parameters of Trek but e.g. not doing a troika of quirky lead characters like in TOS or a hospitable environment like in TNG or a ship plus its Starfleet crew like in four out of five series or whatever other pattern has worked well.

Keep the spirit, change the recipe.
